WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A Virginia State football player has pleaded guilty to assaulting Winston-Salem State's starting quarterback during a luncheon before their game in November.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Martin says Lamont Britt pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of simple assault.
Judge Denise Hartsfield sentenced Britt to 45 days in jail, suspended for one year and probation for a year. The judge imposed the condition that he complete or be in the process of completing his education. Hartsfield also ordered Britt to cooperate with any continued investigations.
An arrest warrant accuses Britt of hitting Rudy Johnson in the face and head in a restroom on Nov. 15 during the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association awards luncheon. It came one day before the two schools were to meet for the league championship, which was canceled.
