Spring is here (when the weather decides to cooperate) and courses are open all across the state.

Before you grab those clubs and shake off a long winter's dust, brush up on your game courtesy of this golf tip by Mark Whetzel, the Director of Golf at Thanksgiving Point.

Our first question for the Uinta Golf Tip of the Week comes from Ed Oglesby of Murray: With the grass still dormant coming out of winter, the fairways aren't as plush as they would be in the summer months. Right now they are bare and spotty. How do you hit a crisp shot from those bare lies? I keep topping the ball...

Spring golf in Utah? There is nothing better! The only thing that hurts us in spring golf is the dormant grass that creates tight lies, which are very difficult to hit off of.

Here are four great tips to help you execute a tight lie shot:

  • Club up: The last thing you want to do when hitting a golf ball out of a tight lie is overswing - chances are you're going to end up chunking the ball. If at 110 yards out you hit the 56 degree wedge, knock it up a notch and try the 52 degree wedge.
  • Move the ball back in your stance: Moving the ball just a few inches from the instep of your back foot enables the golf club to hit the ball first - the key to hitting it off a tight lie.
  • Move your back foot back: Moving your back foot below your front foot (just a little bit) will help you increase the inside swing path on your downswing.
  • Hood your club: Take the toe of the club and close it (again just a little bit).

By clubbing up and doing these three simple swing adjustments, you are enabling yourself to hit the ball first and create solid contact.

Practice it, we guarantee it works.

For using your question you will receive a dozen of the new Nike RZN black golf balls. Go to any of the Uinta Golf stores to pick up your prize.
