(KSL News) -- The Utah County Sheriff has proposed a law against approaching a child with the intent to do harm.

Sheriff Jim Tracy says prosecutors should be able to charge would-be predators if they try to entice a child without physically touching them.

He said the action is no less a crime than attempted murder or attempted rape because the suspect is taking substantial steps to commit a crime.

Tracy also said it would be important to phrase the law so innocent people merely talking to children are not charged.
