Congressman Fattah Recognizes Brain Awareness Week
WASHINGTON, March 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman
Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a Senior Member on the House Appropriations
Committee and lead Democrat on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice,
Science and related agencies, released the following statement on
Brain Awareness Week, celebrated March 10-16, 2014. Fattah is
architect of the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative, a non-incremental
policy initiative seeking to achieve groundbreaking progress in
understanding the human brain:
"For almost twenty years, the Society for Neuroscience, together with
the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, has sponsored Brain Awareness
Week to educate the public, heighten awareness, and inspire a new
generation of scientists interested in studying the human brain.
These partners are uniquely committed to improving public awareness of
brain and nervous system research, and I join with them this week-and
every week- in doing my part to make neuroscience a national priority.
"Raising awareness and expanding outreach is crucial to heightening
worldwide advocacy efforts and increasing support for neuroscience. In
the last year alone, we have seen huge strides in the global
commitment to neuroscience, including the United States' own BRAIN
Initiative, and new brain projects in the European Union, Israel, and
Australia. These advancements are fundamental to discovering
treatments and cures for brain disorders and diseases, but they can
only continue with the support and partnership of the federal
government, private sector partners, and an enthusiastic research and
science community.

and the contributions that thousands of dedicated scientists are
making to unlock the mysteries behind the human brain."
On Wednesday, Fattah will meet with the Brain Injury Association of
Pennsylvania as part of Brain Awareness Week. Throughout the week,
Congressman Fattah will also be honored for his neuroscience advocacy
through the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative at three events:
-- On Wednesday, March 12, Fattah will be honored with the Whitehead
Award for medical research advocacy from Research!America in
Washington, D.C.
-- On Thursday, March 13, the Science Coalition will present
Congressman Fattah with the Champion of Science Award at a National
Labs Caucus briefing on Capitol Hill
-- On Saturday, March 15, Fattah will receive the Lifetime Achievement
Award from the Delaware Valley Stroke Council in Philadelphia, PA
