SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City man was arrested Monday after his girlfriend's 1-year-old son was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Brian Taylor, 24, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of child abuse after the baby suffered major head trauma while alone with him for a short period of time, according to jail documents.

The 1-year-old boy, who was on life support Monday, isn't expected to survive, jail documents state.

"(We're) hoping he pulls through, but he's in pretty bad shape right now," said Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Heiden.

Taylor was the mother's boyfriend but not the baby's father, Heiden said. She wouldn't say exactly what Taylor did to harm the child and cause head trauma.

A 911 call for "medical help" was made Monday afternoon from a house at 2393 S. 800 East, Heiden said.

Doctors at Primary Children's Hospital called police to report possible abuse, Heiden said.

"The boyfriend was left with the child, and the child was in good condition," Heiden said. "When they came home, he was in the condition he was transported to the hospital in."

Investigators obtained a search warrant to go through the toddler's house Monday afternoon. They spent six hours at the house talking with family members, and about an hour collecting evidence.
