Carole Mikita reporting The Mormon Tabernacle Choir lost its music director last night with Craig Jessop's sudden resignation. Everyone Eyewitness News has spoken with has used the same word about this resignation: shocked. Some have been very emotional about what they consider a personal loss.
Jessop walked into the rehearsal room at the Tabernacle last night, read a statement to choir members and then left. They say they were confused, speechless and some so sad they shed tears for a man they love.
For nearly 10 years, Jessop has held the title of music director. He is known in the music world as energetic, dynamic, hands-on and very creative. Under his leadership, the choir and Orchestra at Temple Square launched a private record label in 2003, releasing more than 10 albums. Several have hit number one on the Classical Music Chart.
During his tenure, the choir was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, received the National Medal of Arts and Special Recognition Award from International Radio and Television Society.
Those who have worked with Jessop call him a consummate professional. "It's actually a pretty sad day for many people to think he won't be in that position. But I respect his decision and I just wish him the very greatest success in whatever he does next," said Janice Kapp Perry, composer and former choir member.
David Green, interim CEO of the Utah Symphony, said, "We were obviously absolutely shocked to hear of his resignation from the Tabernacle Choir this morning. Craig has been such an incredible support to us as an orchestra and our organization here, and we've collaborated on many events."
Jessop left this morning for New York City, where he is conducting the Brahms' "Requiem," leading the winners of the National High School Honor Choral Festival at Carnegie Hall.
In his statement, Jessop said he "is at a major crossroads of life" and that he "intends to stay active in the music world."
Eyewitness News tried to reach Jessop by phone, but he has not returned our calls.
