PROVO — Thursday, Brigham Young University Museum of Art debuted four Carl Bloch paintings that are on an “extraordinary” loan from a Danish castle.
As part of its “Sacred Gifts” exhibit BYU is displaying four of eight Bloch paintings on loan from the Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark starting Thursday. The exhibit features several other Bloch paintings, as well as works by Heinrich Hofmann and Frans Schwartz, totaling more than two dozen works.
In addition to Denmark, the works also come from Sweden, Germany and the Riverside Church in New York City.
Only four of the eight paintings from the Frederiksborg Castle will be shown at one time. In February, the four not currently on display will be available for the public to view. According to the Museum of Art, this is the only time the paintings will be loaned out.
“We have extraordinarily given this permission in recognition of the great importance these images have for the people of Utah,” said Mette Skougaard, Director of the Frederiksborg Castle, in a letter to the BYU Museum of Art. “(We) will for this occasion share the unique works with people in another continent who have a special appreciation for the religious works of Bloch.”
Visitors must register for tickets for the exhibit. Tickets are free and available online.
Visitors can also rent iPads with an interactive audiovisual app about the exhibit at the museum.
