BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - The mayor of the Serbian capital, who leads the country's main opposition party, has been ousted from the position by the ruling populist majority.
Dragan Djilas was removed in a 60-0 vote in the Belgrade city assembly Tuesday. Fifty assembly members abstained from the vote.
The Belgrade mayor is not directly elected by the people but rather selected by the city assembly.
Djilas' pro-Western Democratic Party lost the presidential and parliamentary election last year, but the party did well on the municipal level and Djilas had managed to hang on as mayor.
That changed when allies of the Democrats decided to join the ruling Serbian Progressive Party in ousting him Tuesday.
Djilas has accused the Progressive Party of pursuing authoritarian rule in the country.
