(KSL News) -- Police feared it was a hate crime aimed at missionaries serving for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But now it seems that wasn't the case.

Joseph Romero ran his car into a man wearing dark pants, a white shirt and a name tag. A witness said Romero called the victims Mormons and told them to go back to church.

Romero denies saying anything like that. He says he and the victim were simply in a fight. In fact, Romero claims to be a member of the LDS church.

Romero was never charged with a hate crime, but he pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated assault. The victim recovered.
