Samantha Hayes ReportingIf you are just getting home and going through your mail, look for the plastic bag from the Utah Food Bank. The Food Bank is joining forces with the Post Office for the largest nationwide drive of the year.
All you have to do is fill the bag with canned foods, peanut butter, pasta, those types of items and the post office will pick it up tomorrow from your house.
Rex Searle, Letter Carrier: "We pick up the food, the bags, and we take care of it. All they have to do is give."
The Letter Carrier Food drive is a nationwide effort and it's easy for you. Just fill the plastic bag with food and the post office picks it up at your house Saturday morning.
Rex Searle, Letter Carrier: "It's a little extra work for us, but we can even have our family come help and they'll pick up the bags and take care of it. Family involved makes for a different kind of day, a fun activity."
And it helps the Food Bank get through one of the leanest times of year.
Jim Pugh, Utah Food Bank: "We are getting close to the summer months, and typically these summer times are hard for us to get enough donations to meet the demand."
Chances are, what's already in your kitchen pantry is what they want.
Jim Pugh: "If it's something you would use to feed your family, we're dealing with the same type of people with the same diet requirements."
Last year, with the post office's help, the Utah Food Bank gathered over a million pounds of food. They have a goal to bring in more this weekend.
