LAYTON — Layton police are investigating after a homeowner sent them video footage of his neighbors setting off dry ice bombs.

Keith Patrick heard explosions inside his Layton home and began videoing three adults and a teenager with his video camera while they were setting off bombs behind his house.

"I was kind of shocked and amazed," Patrick said. "Because I figured this was a serious offense."

During the incident, the video footage shows the teenager shooting a bottle with a BB gun to trigger an explosion. He is also seen filling a milk jug with explosive material.

No one was hurt during the explosions and there wasn't any property damage as a result, according to Layton police. However, Lt. Shawn Horton said that what started as a prank created a very real danger.

"Anytime the bottle explodes, you're going to have pieces of the plastic, pieces of the dry ice that are going to fly," Horton said.

Horton said that dry ice bombs are illegal, even if you do them on your own property.

"The dry ice bomb is dangerous in itself," Horton said. "And anytime you put it inside something, it will expand. And if they're close by, you could be injured by it."

Police officers said those involved in the dry ice bombs were a 16-year-old and his parents, and a 21 year-old. The parents reported that they felt embarrassed by their actions, and that the incident wouldn't happen again.

No official charges were filed in connection with the incident.
