SPANISH FORK — A near head-on collision on SR-89 closed the highway for an hour Friday night.

A southbound Acura attempted to pass a slow moving vehicle on the snowy roads near mile marker 301. A Dodge pickup truck came down the highway heading northbound and the two vehicles collided nearly head-on in the same lane.

William Brackett, 27, Driver of the Acura, was in critical condition after the accident, suffering a broken leg and a broken hip.

Brackett was transported by ambulance to the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon. He was then transferred by air to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

The pickup driver, 45-year-old Richard Kocinski, was in poor condition after suffering cuts to the head. He was transported by ambulance to the same hospital. He has since been released.

Police and emergency responders said that the vehicles were traveling too fast for the road conditions.
