During the holiday season I always find myself fondly remembering my grandmother's cooking. She's been gone for a long time now but I still get cravings, especially around Christmas for her yummy home-style German cooking.
Well, good German cuisine isn't easy to find in our area. But there are a couple of places I do like a lot. First, Siegfried's on 200 South in downtown Salt Lake is a German delicatessen and cafeteria, with really great weinerschnitzel, which I always enjoy with a steaming side of homemade spaetzle and gravy. And Siegfried's is also a German market where you can get all sorts of ingredients for German cooking at home, from weisswurst and bratwurst to imported gummy bears and German breads.
My other favorite German eatery is up in Ogden on Harrison Boulevard and it's called the Bavarian Chalet. It even looks like a real Bavarian Chalet with lots of knickknacks and cuckoo clocks and there's also a small shop at the restaurant where you can buy German souvenirs.
The Bavarian Chalet serves up all sorts of authentic German dishes but I suggest ordering the King Ludwig Platter, which is a humungous combination plate with all sorts of good things like bratwurst, weinerschnitzel, sauerkraut, spaetzle, and lots more.
Well, if you know of any places to find good German food besides Siegfried's and the Bavarian Chalet, I'd love to know about them. Because I still miss Grandma's cooking at Christmas.
