Since opening a few years ago, Trio Caf downtown has been one of my favorite stops for Italian-inspired dining. Well, for those of you in the south part of town you'll be happy to know that now there are two Trios. The Trio Caf in Cottonwood - in the space where Rivers restaurant used to be - is bigger than the original Trio Cafe. But the way that it's divided into distinct dining areas means that there's less noise at the Cottonwood location, and the spacious digs mean a little less hustle and bustle not to mention an easier time of getting a table, since neither Trio Caf takes reservations.

The generous salads served at Trio Caf are terrific. I especially like the Caesar salad with classic creamy parmesan and anchovy dressing. And by the way, the cinnamon and sugar flatbread strips served during Sunday brunch at Trio are irresistible. You can't eat just one!

But pasta and pizza is at the heart of the Trio menu. Pizzas at Trio begin with thin, crispy crusts and include some interesting toppings like barbequed chicken, four cheeses with fresh herbs and balsamic vinegar and a classic Margherita pizza. As for pasta dishes, I'm partial to the hearty mushroom pappardelle which is wonderful wintry fare and I also like Trio's orecchiette arrabbiata, which is little ear-shaped pasta with spicy Italian sausage and ricotta cheese.

So now there's double the Trios, with the original downtown location on 900 East and the newer Trio at 64th South and 30th East in Cottonwood.
