SALT LAKE CITY — The Lone Peak Knights have high expectations this season.
Orem shocked Lone Peak in the Great Western Shootout last season and now look for revenge is this matchup of 4A and 5A champs. No. 3 Bear River at No. 4 Spanish Fork Friday 7pm
Both of these teams are off to a great start and look like 3A state title contenders. This could have a playoff feel on Friday night.No. 3 Provo at American Fork
This is a chance for Provo to make a statement against a very good 5A team. Another quality win could propel American Fork into the top five.No. 2 Davis at Bingham
The Davis Darts are looking for another impressive non-region win while Bingham would make some noise with a win over the Darts.No. 5 Riverton at Judge Memorial Tuesday 7pm
Judge has already knocked off some big name programs from larger classifications. Can they knock off a ranked 5A team?
Smith scored 41 points and made five 3-pointers in a 65-51 win over Bonneville. Parker Van Dyke East
The University of Utah signee scored 43 points, including nine 3-point shots leading East to a 71-59 win at Hunter.Hayden Schenck Weber
You can't tell Schenck suffered a torn ACL in last years 5A state tournament. The high-flying point guard averaged 34 points and 5 steals in two wins last week for the Warriors who are off to a 3-0 start.Ryan Andrus American Fork
The 6-foot-9 center scored a career-high 29 points leading the Cavemen to a 48-44 win over Bountiful.Jacob Bigler Northridge
Bigler scored 29 points and made seven 3-point shots to lead the Knights in a 79-54 win over Carbon.
Those expectations may be higher after an impressive first week of the season.
The two time defending 5A champs started the week with an impressive win over No. 2 Brighton 79-59. The Knights opened the game with an 18-0 lead and held off a 3rd quarter rally to defeat the Bengals. The Knights then traveled to Chicago for the Chicago Elite Classic where they faced the 13th ranked team in the country Proviso East (Ill.). They returned home with a 87-46 victory over a nationally ranked powerhouse and moved up to 3rd in the country in the latest MaxPreps rankings.
The Knights are followed in the KSL Coaches Poll by Davis who is off to an impressive 3-0 start with wins over Riverton, Alta and Cottonwood. Brighton drops to 3rd in the poll after the loss to Lone Peak but they bounced back Friday with a road win over Lehi. Weber is also off to a great start and they move into the top five at No. 4. The Warriors have wins over Sky View, Roy and Mountain Crest. Riverton remains at No. 5.
Defending 4A state champion is still waiting to make their season debut. That will happen this week when they host the Great Western Shootout. The three day tournament will feature eight teams from Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and Utah and will conclude with a huge matchup between Orem and Lone Peak on Saturday. Mountain Crest moves up to No. 2 after a win over Fremont and a close loss at Weber. They are followed by two Utah County teams Provo and Timpview. The Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start and face a tough test at American Fork on Friday. Timpview opened their season with an impressive 64-60 win at Alta. Sky View returns to the top five this week at No. 5.
Judge continued to roll against bigger schools this week. The bulldogs opened the season with a 10 point win over Bingham and this week they knocked off East and Skyline. Desert Hills remains at No. 2 after an impressive showing at the 2A/3A Preview which included a win over Morgan. Bear River moves up to No. 3 after going 3-0 at their own tournament capped off by a win over 5A Northridge. Spanish Fork also fared well at the 2A/3A Preview with wins over Dixie and Cedar. Morgan is now No. 5 after falling to Desert Hills 57-46 but defeating defending 3A champion Hurricane 66-42.
2A defending champ South Sevier has dominated 1A and 2A competition to open the season. Now they get their chance to knock off the big boys. The Rams will participate in the Great Western Shootout where they will face West Jordan, Bountiful and Foothill, Nevada. They are followed by Wasatch Academy, South Summit, Emery and Manti.
Layton Christian is off to a 0-4 start against a tough schedule that has included games against South Sevier, Ben Lomond, South Summit and Roy. It hasn't impacted their No. 1 ranking. The defending champs are followed by Panguitch, Duchesne, Bryce Valley and Tintic which makes its debut in the poll.
