SALT LAKE CITY — Halloween approaches, and with it comes a plethora of ways to scare the living daylights out of yourself. Here are just a few options if you prefer your nights sleepless:

Castle of Chaos

  • Locations in Taylorsville, Riverdale and Orem
  • Was named by the Travel Channel as one of America's scariest haunted houses
  • Check it out: The optional Hands On Horror experience allows participants to be touched by actors. Participants must sign a waiver.
  • Price range: $10–$30, depending on how many visits, add-ons purchased.

Nightmare on 13th Street

  • Located at 300 W. 1300 South in Salt Lake City
  • Perhaps Utah's most well-known haunted house; is also known for being the scariest.
  • Check it out: New 2012 attractions include Cr. nightmare's Zombie Apocalypse, the Cirque du Fear and the NetherBeast.
  • Price range: $20, or $30 to skip the lines and get a photo and a drink.

Fear Factory

  • Located at 800 S. 666 West in the downtown industrial area of Salt Lake City.
  • Located on property that was once the Portland Cement Company, the haunted house is themed around common phobias.
  • Check it out: For an additional $15, participants can ride a zip line called "The Last Ride."
  • Price range: $25, or $35 to skip the lines and get a picture and souvenir shot glass or water bottle.

Strangling Brothers Haunted Circus

  • Located at 98 E. 13800 South in Draper
  • Boasts of more than 50,000 square feet of circus-related horror
  • Check it out: Strangling Brothers housed in 23 different tractor-trailers on land off Bangerter Highway. Trailer themes include the Infirmary and Emergency Room, Frankinswine, Forced Perspective and Demented Fun House. Each trailer sticks to the circus theme.

The Haunted Forest

  • Located at 1015 S. 500 East in American Fork
  • The Haunted Forest is entirely outdoors, with participants walking along trails weaving through the forest for nearly an hour.
  • Check it out: Tickets give entrance to the Haunted Forest, Psycho Manor and Haunted Mansion Show, as well as a new 2012 attraction: the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
  • Price: $20 total for all attractions

Anguish Asylum:- Located at 1200 Towne Centre Blvd. in Provo.

  • The asylum is located in the parking garage below the Cinemark 16 in the Provo Towne Center
  • Check it out: Rooms include clowns, a chainsaw maze, and insane asylum, a body shop and a nursery, among others.
  • Price: $15

Zombie Apocalypse

  • Located at 4425 N. Thanksgiving Point Way in Lehi
  • The haunted house is new this year and began as a way to encourage emergency preparedness.
  • Check it out: Hunt for zombies as you weave your way through rooms with nothing but a replica rifle and your own zombie-fighting abilities.
  • Price range: $20, or $40 to skip the line and get a T-shirt.
