Tegucigalpa, Apr 24 (EFE).- The continuous reading of "Don Quixote de la Mancha" being held Monday in this capital has drawn students, government officials, diplomats and other invited guests.

The reading of portions of Spain's greatest literary work - published by Miguel de Cervantes in 1605 - for 12 hours non-stop began at 8 a.m. (1400 GMT) at the National Art Gallery, in downtown Tegucigalpa, and it is being broadcast live by the official Radio Nacional, said organizers of the event in a communique.

The cultural event was opened with a speech by Honduran Education Minister Rafael Pineda and it will conclude with the participation of Culture Minister Rodolfo Pastor.

Taking part in the reading will be students, representatives of cultural organizations, diplomats and other invited guests.

The aim of the program is to emphasize the importance of the Spanish language, which is spoken by more than 400 million people all around the world, event organizers said.

Sponsoring the initiative are the Education Ministry and the Culture, Arts and Sports Ministry of this Central American country, as well as the Spanish Embassy. EFE
