This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Have you ever considered the impact the restaurant industry has on our state economy? In 2012, Utah's restaurants are projected to register over $3 billion in sales. Every dollar spent in Utah's restaurants generates an additional $1.16 in sales for the state economy. In 2012, Utah restaurants employ over 103,000 people, or 8 percent of total state employment.
Spencer and Shelley Chen are adding to Utah's thriving restaurant industry with their business, Kobe (coh-bee) Teppanyaki (teh-pan-yah-key), in Ogden. This is a Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar, open for dinner seven nights a week and lunch by reservation.
At Kobe Teppanyaki, Spencer believes in offering personalized service as much as possible. It's become a favorite birthday destination for many people who return here year after year for their special day. They also receive a special birthday treat. Spencer says Kobe has regulars who eat at the restaurant every week, including one group who comes every Thursday. They keep a table reserved for this group and usually know exactly what they want as soon as they sit down.
A best practice for Kobe Teppanyaki is to take care of their 15 employees. It shows in the number of employees who've been with the company for up to eight years. The staff is trained to serve people the way they want to be served to talk and check back frequently if they want that or leave them alone if that's what they prefer. Spencer believes in treating his employees like family, and when they're happy, they pass it on to the customers.
