SALT LAKE CITY — A man was killed early Wednesday in downtown Salt Lake City after being hit by a car in a crosswalk.
The call came in to police just after 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of 500 S. Main. Officers arrived and found a 51-year-old man had been killed in the crash, Salt Lake City Police Lt. Craig Gleason said.
The man was apparently in a crosswalk, but was walking against the light when he was hit. The impact threw his body more than 60 feet into the intersection.
Gleason said witnesses reported seeing the driver of the car continue down the block before stopping, briefly leaving the car and then fleeing the scene. At this point, police believe the suspect vehicle is a dark color with four doors and damage on the front end, windshield and hood.
"There's s lot of video going on (in the area), so it's hopeful we'll get some better imagery," Gleason said.
Investigators will look at traffic and surveillance cameras from buildings in the area in an effort to find an image of the vehicle and, potentially, its license plate number.
Police do believe the collision was an accident, but said the driver now faces possible charges for fleeing the scene of an accident.
Gleason said there was a steady stream of cars along the street at the time of the accident and that police are hoping to talk to any drivers who may have seen what happened. Those with any information have been asked to call 801-799-3000.
The man's name has not been released pending family notification.
