LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — A trio of women out for a morning drive escaped serious injury after the SUV they were in hit a patch of black ice and plummeted down an embankment.

Unified Police Department spokesman Justin Hoyal said the women were headed east up Little Cottonwood Canyon at 8:15 a.m. Sunday when the vehicle they were in hit the ice and went off the side of the roadway.

The vehicle traveled nearly 70 feet down the hill, hitting some shrubbery and a boulder. Hoyal said the driver was uninjured, the back-seat passenger had minor scrapes and the front-seat passenger sustained head injuries and was flown to Intermountain Medical Center as a precaution.

Their identities were not available.
