SALT LAKE CITY — The lights at Temple Square are glowing for the season. Groundskeepers flipped the switch at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Crowds cheered as the hundreds of thousands of lights come on at once. There are also nativity scenes, performances, Christmas displays, and lots of other moments planned over the next month for families to enjoy.

Some of the visitors at Temple Square Friday night said attending the first night of Christmas lights is a tradition.
"It is amazing," said Zach Hansen, who was visiting from Boise, Idaho. "I remember it had a lot of lights in the years previous, and it looks like they down played it a little bit (this year). But it is special. It is a must-do for anytime at Christmas."
"I don't listen to Christmas music until Thanksgiving is over. And now it starts the Christmas season, and this starts it very well," said Millcreek resident Richard Sommer.
Every night until New Years, the Christmas lights will come on at dusk and will be turned off at about 10 p.m.
