LOGAN — An out-of-control dump truck plowed through an intersection in Logan Friday afternoon and smashed through the side of a motel. Now witnesses are calling the truck's driver a hero.

Robert Horning was driving through Logan at 4th North and Main Street — one of the city's busiest intersections. He saw something in his rearview mirror that initially confused him.

"I looked behind me, and I saw this dump truck traveling toward me at a high rate of speed," Horning said.

Investigators say the driver lost the brakes as she was headed west down the hill into town. She swerved around several cars but ended up going through a 7-Eleven parking lot and into the side of the Quality Inn at 447 N. Main Street..

"It was remarkable that she was able to avoid any other vehicles," said Assistant Chief Craig Humphreys, of the Logan Fire Department. "(The truck was) not running into gas pumps, not running into people, not running into another car; so much worse could have happened here."

Crews had to cut open the passenger door to reach the injured driver. She was taken to the hospital. Investigators are now trying to figure out what caused the truck's brakes to fail.
