A witness called police and told them a smashed-up car was in the middle of U-111 near 5400 South.

When police arrived, the passenger was trying to help the driver out of the car. Crews performed C-P-R several times on the driver, and finally revived him. He's in extremely critical condition. The passenger has died.

Officers believe the driver smashed into a barricade on the right side of the road and then ricocheted into a barrier in the middle of the road.
