LOGAN — Alerted by firefighters of a blaze burning in a four-plex, police officers awakened sleeping residents in the building early Sunday, getting them to safety.

Residents in one of the four units smelled smoke and had their smoke detector go off at 12:15 a.m. Sunday at 952 Canyon Road.

They called the fire department, who in turn alerted police to help get tenants to safety.

The fire, said Logan Assistant Fire Chief Brady Hansen, started in one of the units in which the occupants were not home.

Extensive damage was caused by the blaze, which was large and intense enough that a neighboring four-plex also sustained damage due to exposure to the heat.

Hansen said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it appears to be an accident.
