RIVERTON -- A man was in extremely critical condition after he stepped into traffic and was hit by a car.

Police say the 46-year-old man stepped out from between two cars just before 10 p.m. Wednesday as he tried to cross 12600 South at 2300 West.

"There were two or three cars in a row," said Deputy Chief Shane Hudson. "There was normal spacing between the cars. So we really don't understand why he walked out. There's no crosswalk here. The intersection is fairly well lit."

"A vehicle traveling east passes him and he missed that one, but there was another vehicle behind that ended up striking the pedestrian," Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said.

Police questioned the driver of the vehicle but there's no word on possible charges.

The man was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition. Hoyal said he suffered broken bones, but is expected to survive his injuries.

The roadway is "well-traveled" but is also lined with some streetlights, the lieutenant said.
