SALT LAKE CITY -- Big news from Broadway: "The Book of Mormon" won nine Tony Awards Sunday night, making the musical the runaway winner.
The awards included:
- Best Musical
- Direction
- Featured Actress (first-time nominee Nikki M. James)
- Score
- Orchestrations
- Book
- Lighting Design
- Scenic Design
- Sound Design
The Deseret News analyzed the show's content, based on its official script and lyrics, and found "several errors and misrepresentations that go beyond the bounds of generalization for comedy's sake." Sunday's newspaper article mentions the musical's use of profanity, misrepresentations of LDS beliefs, and inaccuracies about Uganda and its citizens.
The musical's creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, told The Hollywood Reporter they don't know if it will ever be made into a movie. But they did say "The Book of Mormon" would not be made into a South Park episode. "That wouldn't be cool," Parker said.
Back in February, the Church issued a statement about the musical, stating, "The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening, but the Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change people's lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ."
