AMERICAN FORK — Two men were killed instantly Tuesday evening after their car crossed into oncoming traffic.
The men were traveling north on 900 East near 900 North around 8 p.m. when their small sports car crossed over the center line and collided with a pickup truck, American Fork Police Sgt. Gregg Ludlow said.
Lowell J. Budge, 45, of Cedar Hills, and Steven Sean Peart, 44, of Pleasant Grove, died at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck, Tony Sudweeks, was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in a medical helicopter and remained hospitalized in good condition Wednesday, Ludlow said. He was the sole occupant of the truck.
Sudweeks, 19, told KSL News he expects to make a full recovery and should be discharged in the next couple of days. He said he suffered a broken bone in his face, cuts on his head from hitting the windshield and spinal shock.
"It just kind of came out of nowhere," Sudweeks said. "They drifted around the corner, and as they drifted they saw me and overcorrected. I didn't hit my brakes fast enough."
Sudweeks said he blacked out during the initial impact and woke up at the scene before paramedics had arrived. He was bleeding from his mouth but his concerns were with the other vehicle.
"All I could think of was I wasn't worried about myself, I was worried about the people in the other car," Sudweeks said.
None of those involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, Ludlow said. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
According to a family friend, Peart leaves behind a wife and four children. The family has set up a memorial fund* at Family First Credit Union in the man's name.
