CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- A Cedar City official wants developers to bring water rights with them when they introduce plans for new homes and businesses.
City Engineer Kit Wareham says the measure is needed to compensate for booming development, which is squeezing the region's once-plentiful water supplies. At current rates, he expects the city's water rights to be all used up in about seven years.
Developers must already provide water rights in Iron County land annexations and in Enoch city.
Wareham says the requirement would ensure that Cedar City has enough water to meet demands in its annexation area. The city council is expected to vote on the proposal February eighth.
