Nishi Gupta ReportingSeven members of a Korean Alpine group are trapped on Mount Olympus tonight. The group's plan was to hike from 9:00 this morning until 4:00 in the evening, but at some point they mis-stepped and fell on the north part of the mountain.
The Salt Lake County sheriff's office says all seven of them are injured. Four of them have minor injuries, but the other three are more serious, including injuries to the chest, arms and legs.
The Salt Lake county sheriff's office says the group is experienced and was prepared with food, clothes and cell phones, and that's how they were able to call for help.
Lt. Chris Bertram, Salt Lake Co. Sheriff's Office: "We have just been able to get four of our rescuers to the top of Mount Olympus. They're about 300 meters away, but they have to hike down to get to them. It's kind of a dangerous area because of ice and snow and the descent is somewhat steep."
The sheriff's office says once the rescuers meet up with the hikers, they'll assess their injuries and from there will decide how likely it is to get them off the mountain. They're also going to have to decide if it's better to get them off by helicopter or if it’s better to hike them off the mountain.
If the hikers cannot be rescued tonight, the sheriff's office says it will stay there and start the rescue at daybreak tomorrow morning. But no matter what, the four rescuers will stay with the hikers and the hikers will be provided supplies such as sleeping packs warm clothes and food and water to help get them through however long it is they have to stay.
