SALT LAKE CITY - Utah men's basketball head coach Larry Krystkowiak announced the hiring of DeMarlo Slocum as an assistant coach Sunday. Slocum comes to Utah from Colorado State, where he spent three years in the same position.
"I'm very excited and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Utah basketball," said Slocum. "The biggest thing for me in this decision was the staff I would be working with, and after speaking with Coach K, I have all the belief that he is the right man for this job. I have known [assistant coach] Tommy Connor for a while and the job he has done speaks for itself. Growing up in Las Vegas and coaching at CSU, I have been around Utah basketball for a long time and I know what a national powerhouse it can be. Once I got on campus and saw for myself the resources and commitment behind athletics, especially basketball, I knew this would be a great opportunity."
In his three years at CSU, Slocum worked primarily with the guards and shared recruiting responsibilities. Before coming to Colorado State, Slocum served as an assistant coach at the University of Idaho.
"I am confident in my decision to come and work under Coach K and I know I'm in great hands at Utah," said Slocum. "But I want to acknowledge also what a tough decision it was to leave Tim Miles and his staff. Colorado State is a class-A program and it was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. CSU has the right man in place and it's a program on the rise."
"Coach Slocum is a well-respected coach and we are excited to add him to our staff," said Krystkowiak. "He is a solid recruiter whose strength lies in the Pac-12 region and the state of Utah, which we need to focus on as we move into our new conference. DeMarlo also does a tremendous job of skill development on the floor, particularly with guards and wings, so we feel he is a perfect fit for Utah basketball."
Prior to joining the Idaho Vandals, Slocum was the head coach of the Las Vegas Prospects AAU team for five years. During his tenure the team was ranked among the top five AAU teams on the west coast. Slocum has worked at various collegiate basketball development camps across America, as well as the West Coast All-Star Camp and the Adidas Superstar Camp.
Slocum, a Las Vegas, Nev. Native, also served one season as an assistant coach at Dixie State before moving to Southern California as the Trojans' director of basketball operations for a season. While with the USC, Slocum was in charge of on-campus recruiting, team travel, scouting and camp coordination.
As a student-athlete, Slocum spent two years at Dixie State College before playing his final two seasons at Georgia Southern, where he earned a degree in public recreation/kinesiology in 2001. During his junior season at Georgia Southern he was the team's second-leading scorer, then finished fourth in scoring as a senior.
