PROVO — Search and rescue crews ended their search Thursday afternoon for a wheelchair-bound person who they initially believed may have fallen in the Provo River after the wheelchair's owner was found safe.
A wheelchair was spotted about 11 a.m. on a jogging trail against the bank of the river near I-15. Crews battled bad weather and cold water to search the river and surrounding area for the owner, who was found safe around 3 p.m.
The owner, who police found from a search using the wheelchair's serial number, told police that the six-wheel, joystick operated chair was stolen from her shed a few days ago. Police said the search for the owner was delayed because the current owner had inherited the chair from a relative.
Police are following up on possible leads to find the person who stole the wheelchair.
