SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- It's best known for handling thousands of airline passengers a day, but the Salt Lake City International Airport is now recognized for how it handles its trash as well.

The airport's efforts to recycle everything from office paper to old airplane tires have earned it the "Local Government Recycling Program of the Year" award from the Recycling Coalition of Utah.

For travelers in areas behind the security gates, that means finding recycling bins for plastic items and newspapers alongside trash bins. It's added up to about 150 tons in the three years.

An additional 89 tons of office paper has been diverted from the landfill, as have more than 900 tires, 660 batteries and 250 tons of scrap metal. The airport is reprocessing the glycol used to de-ice aircraft, recycling motor oil and reusing truckloads of construction material.
