More needs to be done, at every level, to combat the escalation across the land of methamphetamine abuse.

Meth is at the very core of much of our nation’s crime. Listen to a newscast or read a newspaper and there is likely to be an account of another meth related incident. It destroys lives, tears apart families and fills prisons. Indeed, cops nationwide, as well as here in Utah, rank meth the number one drug they battle today.

Meth is, without doubt, a terrible societal plague.

At the national level, KSL urges the Bush Administration to give meth its highest priority in the war on drugs. While the administration’s focus on marijuana is important, in our view, meth abuse has risen to epidemic status and warrants greater attention for the damage it is doing.

At the local level, quite simply, more funding needs to be directed toward tried and tested prevention and treatment programs. Society needs to realize it is cheaper to treat people for their addictions than it is to build more prisons.

It is said more than 80 percent of those in prison have a foundational drug addiction. And more than ever, methamphetamine is the source of the problem. Yes, more – much more needs to be done to combat this insidious scourge.
