It's always interesting to hear about the beginning of a company and what lead up to successful partnership. For Schmidt Construction in Cedar City, the partnership started with two words: I do.
That's right — this family-owned business started after Phil and Jessica Schmidt tied the knot. I asked, "How do you handle being married and in a business partnership" and the Schmidts' response was with "a great sense of humor."
They started a construction company, going door-to-door to set up landscaping jobs. Their venture was so successful that 30 years later they now have and manage their own gravel pit, cement trucks, semis, 10-wheelers, water trucks and 45 full-time employees. Depending on the project, they'll have as many as 80 employees.
The highly successful duo is on the state and federal Preferred list because of the quality of work they produce. They attribute much of their operation's success to the talented employees they've hired. As I toured the gravel pit and business operation during my visit, I noticed how Phil took pride to point out to me the talent each of his employees brought to the table. Not only do employees have extensive construction experience, but they also use the latest technology to ensure exactness with every project.
I never knew a gravel pit could be so clean and organized, but that's one of Phil and Jessica's core business principles.
The company's 53-acre gravel pit in Cedar City produces top-quality materials for road base, chips, asphalt, drain rock, pipe bedding, drain gravel and filler material. They also have a machine that washes the material.
The Schmidts are also equipped to do major earth embankments like the 80-acre project consisting of 725,000 yards of dirt and rock excavation. They have also completed a lot of subdivision work and prepared the site where Wal-Mart now sits.
Another core business principle of Schmidt Construction is to finish a project on time. The company has a 100 percent success rate on completing projects on schedule. That's why they get referrals!!
