SALT LAKE CITY -- The Granite School District Board of Education has appointed Dr. Martin W. Bates as the new superintendent of Granite School District.

The move is effective Sept. 1.
Bates will replace current superintendent Dr. Stephen F. Ronnenkamp, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Bates will serve as the 16th superintendent in Granite District's 106-year history.
Bates currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent in the Granite District over Administrative and Legal Services. He has served as an assistant to the superintendent since 1999 and in other district administrative capacities since 1997. He has held previous school administrative positions in the Granite, Provo and Salt Lake City School Districts and taught math for two years in the Provo School District.
"Something that we want to do is get out and talk with our communities," Bares said. "One of the board goals is community engagement, so we want to hear from them as what they see as most important as we work with their children."
His educational background includes multiple degrees from Brigham Young University including a Bachelor of Science in Special Education, a Juris Doctor and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Leadership. He was admitted to the Utah Bar in May of 1997.
