Utah has a long history as an ice-cream loving state. That reputation may have partially been fostered by some of the state's long-standing ice cream companies. In the programs today and tomorrow, I will feature one of the state's oldest ice cream companies, Farr Better Ice Cream, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.
On March 25, 1920, the Far family officially organized as a Utah corporation and chose the name Asael Farr & Sons Company after the family patriarch. However, only a short time later, the family business grew to become more widely recognized as Farr Better Ice Cream.
Originally Farr's Ice Cream was only sold at the company's flagship ice cream shop in Ogden. That was in a time before ice cream was sold in grocery stores. Three flavors were available: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. And a hefty scoop sold for a nickel.
Since those early days, Farr Better Ice Cream has grown into one of the strongest and most respected regional ice cream brands in the country. The business produces millions of gallons of ice cream annually, selling to thousands of wholesale customers. Farr ice cream products are sold in grocery stories, convenience stores and restaurants throughout Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. The company also produces and sells ice cream mixes and restaurant specialty items coast-to-coast.
Michael Farr, great grandson of Asael, now runs the company with his brothers Darin and Nathan. He says there are more than 600 ice cream recipes on file, all of which are closely guarded for privacy. The Farrs maintain about 70 flavors in stock at all times.
Four generations have now shepherded the family business, and tens of millions of ice cream servings have been produced. Whether someone picks up Farr Better Ice Cream in their local grocery store, enjoys it at a favorite restaurant or visits the shop in downtown Ogden, Michael, Darin and Nathan Farr, together with their many employees, remain committed to continually astonishing their customers with their delicious, fresh ice cream.
