SALT LAKE CITY -- A construction mishap Wednesday morning closed half of the newly-opened Deseret Book flagship store downtown and damaged books.
Deseret Book vice president and store manager Jeff Clark said a worker knocked a sprinkler head off on the second floor, which triggered the entire sprinkler system on the floor.
Virtual Tour:
Water leaked through the ceiling and onto books in the store's west "zone."
"That's the sad part about it: we're still in our grand opening week," Clark said.
Construction crews, the fire department and workers from the corporate headquarters next door were on the scene quickly to help move books.
"The nice part of having them next door is that we put out an ‘all call,' and everybody came running to help," Clark said.
The east side of the store continued to operate, though the west side was closed for hours.
Clark says some of the inventory was damaged, but he couldn't specify how much.
None of the historic, special displays in the store for the grand opening were damaged.
