We hope you’re enjoying a pleasant Labor Day holiday.
It is believed the first observance of Labor Day was a parade in New York City on September 5, 1882. Within a decade, more than half the states began observing a “Labor Day” on one day or another. Then in 1894, it became a federal holiday, to be observed on the first Monday in September.
A good job is something to be grateful for.
This year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the nation’s labor force numbers 149.6 million people. 80.2 million are men and 69.4 million are women.
As you can imagine, they work in a wide variety of occupations.
For instance, the Census Bureau tells us there are 258,000 fire fighters scattered throughout the land; 281,000 chefs and head cooks; 286,000 taxi drivers and chauffeurs; 718,000 hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists; 825,000 farmers and ranchers; and 6.5 million teachers.
In case you’re wondering, the annual median income for men is $40,668 and for women, it’s $30,724.
It’s nice to have a holiday that honors the value of work. And it’s always refreshing to have a day off. In the end, though, the good thing for American workers is having a job to return to tomorrow. It is a blessing KSL hopes no one takes for granted.
