Mississippi St quarterback Blake Shapen out for the season with shoulder injury

Mississippi State senior starting quarterback Blake Shapen will miss the rest of the season after sustaining a shoulder injury that will require surgery. The school announced Saturday night that Shapen would be out, after the Bulldogs fell 45-28 at home to Florida in its SEC opener. The Baylor transfer was injured in the fourth quarter and left the game after completing 13 of 21 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown; he also rushed 12 times for 32 yards and a score. Shapen completed 69% of his passes for 974 yards and eight TDs with an interception in four games for the rebuilding Bulldogs.

AP Top 25: No. 5 Tennessee continues to climb and Boise State enters poll for first time since 2020

Tennessee moved up to No. 5 in The Associated Press college football poll as the Volunteers continue to surge up the rankings, and No. 25 Boise State returned to the AP Top 25 for the first time in four years. Texas was No. 1 for the second straight week, receiving 44 of 62 first-place votes as the top four teams remained the same. Georgia held at No. 2, receiving 13 first-place votes, and Ohio State is No. 3 with five first-place votes. Alabama is No. 4. The Vols, who started the season ranked No. 15, won at Oklahoma on Saturday night.

Just a month ago, the long-awaited Jackson Arnold era was underway at Oklahoma. The highly touted quarterback seemed ready to take his place among the greats at a school that has produced four Heisman winners this century at the position. Now, he's fighting for his job. Michael Hawkins Jr. sparked the Sooners in the second half of their 25-15 loss to Tennessee, and now coach Brent Venables has declared the position open heading into Saturday's game at Auburn.

2 suspended from college swim team after report of slur scratched onto student's body

Officials at a Pennsylvania college say at least two students were suspended from the swim team after a report that a racial slur was scratched onto a student's body. Gettysburg College said in a statement last week that officials had received "a deeply concerning report of a racial slur being scratched onto a student using a plastic or ceramic tool." The college says that "at this point, the students involved are not participating in swim team activities." The college's president says it is reported to have happened during an "informal social gathering at an on-campus residence."

Brayden Schager throws for 374 yards, 4 TDs as Hawaii beats N. Iowa 36-7

Brayden Schager completed 35 of 43 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns to help Hawaii beat Northern Iowa 36-7. Caleb Brown forced a fumble on the opened drive that was recovered Jamih Otis and six plays later Schager hit Jonah Panoke for a 24-yard touchdown that gave Hawaii (2-2) a 7-0 lead with 7:58 left in the first quarter. Schager added a 6-yard TD to Pofele Ashlock late in the first and a 20-yarder to Nick Cenacle that made it 22-0 with 9:10 left in the second. Northern Iowa (2-2) answered with an eight-play, 72-minute drive that culminated with quarterback Aidan Dunne's 3-yard TD run 5 minutes later but got no closer.
Kaidon Salter throws 4 TD passes, 3 the Reese Smith, and Liberty rallies, beats ECU 35-24

Kaidon Salter threw three of his four touchdown passes to Reese Smith to help Liberty rally from a 17-point deficit and beat ECU 35-24 in a game that was delayed shortly after kickoff for more than 4 1/2 hours due to inclement weather. Liberty (4-0) has won 16 consecutive games in the regular season. Salter hit Smith for TDs of 17, 14 and 15 yards on consecutive drives, that last of which gave Liberty the lead for good at 28-24 with 8:10 to play. Jake Garcia's 8-yard touchdown run for ECU opened the scoring, Marlon Gunn Jr. added a 1-yard TD run and Andrew Conrad made a 35-yard field goal to make it 17-0 with 11:52 remaining in the first half.
Lan Larison accounts for 3 TDs as UC Davis beats Utah Tech 32-14

Lan Larison had 120 yards rushing and two touchdowns and added five receptions for 43 yards and a score, Hunter Ridley kicked a career-high four field goals and UC Davis beat Utah Tech 32-14. Larison opened the scoring with a 7-yard TD run less than four minutes into the game and Ridley made field goals of 19, 27, 34 and 25 yards to make it 18-0 at halftime. Larison added a 2-yard TD reception early in the third quarter and his 7-yard scoring run with 5:02 left in the third made it 32-7. Reggie Graff's 12-yard touchdown run midway through the third got Utah Tech (0-4) on the scoreboard and his 48-yard scoring connection with Bryce Parker capped the scoring.

Maddux Madsen threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score to help Boise State beat Portland State 56-14. Dylan Riley had 96 yards rushing and touchdowns and Cameron Camper had TD receptions of 18 yards late in the second quarter and 52 yards to open the scoring in the third. Riley scored on a 2-yard run that made it 42-7 going into the fourth quarter. Dante Chachere's fumble near the goal line was recovered by running back Delon Thompson for a Portland State (0-3) touchdown that made it 7-7 with 5 minutes left in the first quarter. Chachere scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
BYU forces 3 turnovers, gets 90-yard punt return TD in 38-9 rout of No. 13 Kansas State

BYU's defense forced three turnovers, Jake Retzlaff threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns and Parker Kingston had a highlight reel 90-yard punt return touchdown in a 38-9 victory over No. 13 Kansas State on Saturday night. Sione Moa added a career-high 76 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Cougars snapped a five-game losing streak to Big 12 opponents in emphatic fashion. Avery Johnson piled up 204 yards of total offense for the Wildcats but also threw a pair of interceptions. DJ Giddens rushed 93 yards on 19 carries as Kansas State dropped to 0-4 all-time in Provo.
