SALT LAKE CITY — Mitt Romney won't be wearing boxing gloves this year, but he is expected to emcee the second annual "Fight Night" charity boxing match to benefit Utah-based nonprofit CharityVision, headed by his son Josh.
Even without the former presidential candidate in the ring, Josh Romney said he hopes the June 11 match between retired champion boxer Oscar De La Hoya and "Extra" host Mario Lopez exceeds the $1 million raised last year.
Last year, Mitt Romney lasted two rounds against Evander Holyfield, the former heavyweight champion of the world, in what was billed as "The Heavyweight Fight of the Century."
"I think he would have done it (again) for sure had we asked him, but we wanted to branch out and do something a little different and give my dad a break," Josh Romney said. "He had a great time."
The money raised last year allowed CharityVision to assist patients in 25 countries with more than 40,000 surgeries, Josh Romney said, calling watching people see for the first time "one of the most remarkable and moving experiences.”
The fight is set for 6 p.m. at the Rail Event Center, 235 N. 500 West. Tickets are available at charityvision.net. A commemorative "Fight Night" T-shirt is available for a $25 donation, the average cost of restoring eyesight.
