COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — When Zach Doyle noticed that someone had rifled through his truck Monday, he immediately checked video from his security cameras.

A clip, posted on YouTube by the Cottonwood Heights Police Department, shows a man walking up Doyle's driveway.

The man then walks up the steps to the side door, looks through the back door, then hurriedly walks away and down the street.

"That definitely was something that caught my wife and I off guard," Doyle said. "I don't understand why you would even think about it."

It was 3 a.m. and Doyle and his wife were asleep in the house.

"That door he was looking at is a stained glass door, so looking in you couldn't actually see anything from the outside, but yeah, it's definitely scary," he said.

Cottonwood Heights Police Sergeant Ryan Shosted said thieves are opportunistic. He said the man in the video appears to be looking around, making sure no one is there.

"He could have been looking in the house, he might be looking to see if somebody's home," Shosted said.

Shosted said the man broke into at least one other vehicle in the neighborhood, on the high east side of Cottonwood Heights.

"I believe he got away with some documents that belong to people and some electronics," he said.

Police found a jacket belonging to one of the victims on the ground nearby.

"It's obvious that he grabbed these people's items from the car and threw away things he didn't want," he said.

Police said this case is another reminder to lock your doors and never leave valuables in plain view.

"Just assume there's somebody who may look into your car every night and may take your item if they're left in the car," Shosted said.
