LOGAN — After 17 years leading Logan High's football team to winning seasons in Class 3A, then 4A, and finally 3AA this past year, Mike Favero is calling it a career with the Grizzlies.

The five-time state championship winning coach stepped down from his position this week following a season that saw the Grizzlies win their first 3AA title and fifth overall championship in the Favero era.

Favero said he informed longtime assistant Eric Falk of his decision after Monday's team banquet celebrating the Grizzlies' state title. He never wanted the team's celebration to be about him, he added.

"My kids and wife and I love Logan High football and being a part of that experience," Favero told Cache Valley radio station KVNU on Thursday. "And there are so many Logan High grads playing college football, so I'm going to become a full-time fan of theirs. After 28 years, I'm taking a break."

Logan went 149-60 under Favero, who came to popularize the spread option during his nearly two decade tenure in the Cache Valley. He also helped guide a number of collegiate careers, include former Utah State and BYU quarterback Riley Nelson, younger brother D.J. Nelson who currently plays for the Aggies, Washington State signal caller Luke Falk and current senior defensive end Troy Murray, who has committed to Nevada.

Amid rumors that Favero may be approached to join Matt Wells' staff at Utah State, the longtime high school coach told CacheValleyDaily.com that he was simply looking forward to support current and past Grizzlies in their college careers.

He directly squelched many of those rumors on KVNU's Full Court Press radio show.

"The answer is no. I'm going to be a fan of Chad Artist, DJ Nelson, and the rest of the former Grizzlies at Utah State," Favero said. "You never say never, but my motivation for stepping down was not to coach at Utah State."

Logan finished the 2015 season with an 11-2 record, defeating defending 3AA state champion Dixie in the championship game at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
