SALT LAKE CITY — Six people were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries after two cars collided on Redwood Road Sunday evening.

A black Lexus was traveling southbound on Redwood Road and attempted to make a left turn at 700 North, according to Salt Lake Police Lt. Martin Kaufmann. The Lexus then collided with a white Ford Expedition traveling northbound.

While police are still investigating the incident, preliminary evidence leads them to believe the driver of the Lexus ran a red light, Kaufmann said.

The black Lexus contained five occupants, all 15 and 16-year-old girls, Kaufmann said. The driver of the white SUV was a 40-year-old male. All were taken from the accident location to area hospitals with serious, but non life-threatening conditions.

The front passenger in the Lexus had to be extricated from the vehicle by the local fire department due to the severity of the damage to the front end of the car.

The northbound lane of Redwood Road was temporarily closed from 700 North as the authorities completed their investigation.

Police are looking into whether or not speed or the condition of the roads may have contributed to the accident. There is currently no indication that either driver was impaired.

Both vehicles were totaled and were towed from the scene.
