MONTICELLO, San Juan County — A police sergeant was arrested in connection with an altercation with another man earlier this month.

The San Juan County Sheriff's Office arrested Monticello Police Sgt. Jesse Cole Young on Dec. 4 "following an altercation related to some personal matters" the day before, the city of Monticello said in a statement posted on its website.

Young is being investigated for assault and criminal trespass in a dwelling. San Juan County Sheriff Rick Eldredge said Young walked into the Monticello home of his estranged wife and attacked her friend.

No criminal charges have been filed against him as of Friday. State jail records show Young is no longer in custody.

Young was also placed on administrative leave Dec. 4, according to city officials.

"It's never a happy time to see one of your officers arrested and placed on leave, but we will cooperate as a city with the appropriate investigators and processes to see that justice and fairness are served for all involved," the city statement says.

Asked about allegations that it took several hours before an officer responded to the 911 call about Young's incident, Eldredge said there are concerns about how police handled the call. He said his office is "looking into whether policies and procedures were followed by employees at the time that the call was made" to dispatchers.

"Obviously, when we do our internal investigation, we'll be willing to release those findings," Eldredge said, noting that all dispatch services in the county run through the sheriff's office.

KSL submitted a public records request earlier this week asking for files describing the incident, but those have so far have not been released.
