VIRGIN, Washington County — The 10th edition of the Red Bull Rampage took place in Virgin Thursday and Friday and a St. George man competed against the top mountain bikers in the world.

Dubbed as "mountain biking's greatest freeride contest," the Red Bull Rampage featured 40 top-tier athletes representing countries from around the globe including New Zealand, France, Great Britain, Canada, Spain, Belgium and the U.S. The event challenges the riders by requiring them to "create their own path from the top of a 1,000-foot high ridge to the bottom, flying down uncharted ridges, unmarked paths, and massive walls," the Red Bull website said.

At the Red Bull Rampage, athletes build their own lines to ride by carving trails, jumps and drops into the ridged sandstone terrain outside Virgin. Prior to the competition, many athletes spend days on the mountain creating their unique trails and practicing tricks.

St. George resident and veteran competitor Logan Bingelli, 26, was among those competing in this year's Red Bull Rampage. Bingelli finished third in the event in 2012, but broke his femur during a backflip accident at the Red Bull Rampage in 2013. He rebounded and again began biking in 2014, but broke his fibula a few days before the Rampage in 2014, making this his first year to compete in the event since his big accident.

Bingelli did well in his runs Thursday, placing fourth in the qualifying runs and making it to the finals. However, he had to postpone his second run by 30 minutes on Friday due to wind and didn't end up placing in the top five.

2012 Rampage winner Canadian Kurt Sorge took first at the event by showcasing some "fast and flowy" riding, Red Bull said.
