SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police arrested a man who allegedly held his ex-girlfriend against her will in a garage and assaulted her, officials said.

The victim called police Monday at 11 p.m. and described the residence where she was located. Just before the call ended, police heard her say "put the gun down," according to South Salt Lake police.

Police officers responded to the area of 300 West and 3680 South and heard voices coming from the garage.

Officers opened a side door to the garage, and the 45-year-old woman ran out. The man, 55-year-old Keith Trotter, was trying to hide a handgun and a cellphone in a chair cushion when police entered.

According to a probable cause statement, the woman was locked in the garage for several hours and had been hit several times, strangled with a cable saw and threatened with a handgun, police said.

At one point, Trotter left the garage for a brief time, allowing the victim to block the door and called 911. Trotter forced his way into the garage and assaulted her again, police said.

Trotter was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person and violation of a protective order.

According to the probable cause statement, a criminal history shows Trotter to be a restricted person. He has warrants and police found a protective order that prohibited Trotter from having a firearm.

According to court documents, Trotter has previously been convicted of attempted of illegal possession/use of a controlled substance, aggravated assault, fail to stop/respond at the command of police and aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney Office will screen the case, police said.
