SALT LAKE CITY — A Layton man took the make-believe aura of Salt Lake Comic Con much too far, federal prosecutors say.

Jonathon M. Wall, 29, was charged Wednesday in federal court with two counts of impersonation of a federal officer for allegedly claiming he was seeking a fugitive to get an all-access pass at Salt Lake Comic Con in September.

Wall pretended he was a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations "under the ruse that he was entering the VIP area to apprehend a wanted fugitive," said Melodie Rydalch, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, in a statement Wednesday.

A comic con security worker, a retired Salt Lake police officer, reportedly noticed Wall's behavior and contacted the actual Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Special agents from that office then questioned Wall, Rydalch said.

Wall was also federally charged Wednesday with making a false statement to a federal agent for allegedly telling investigators he had asked for one pass when he in fact had requested two.

Wall could face up to three years in federal prison for each count of impersonating a federal officer and up to five years for lying to investigators. Wall may also be fined up to $250,000 for each charge if found guilty.

An initial court date hasn't been set in the case, pending a summons requiring Wall to appear in court.
