PROVO — This season Cougar fans — and sometimes even fans of opposing teams — have been blessed to read the hilarious tweets from an anonymous BYU fan who goes by the name of Boney Fuller.

Fuller burst onto the scene as a recent addition to the BYU crowd on Twitter, posting photos and memes of various BYU opponents in a good-natured attempt at pre-game ribbing.

Here's an example from this Saturday's opponent, East Carolina, along with a response from the player Fuller ribbed, who takes the joke like a champ.

So, who is the man (or woman) behind the tweets? As an anonymous Twitter entity, Fuller won't tell. But here are a few of my (likely misinformed) guesses.

LaVell Edwards

The legendary coach could be the man behind the tweets for multiple reasons. First of all, Edwards was known to be good for a well-timed quip. My personal favorite was when then-President of BYU Jeffrey R. Holland asked Edwards if he wanted to sign a lifetime contract. The coach said, "No, you guys would just call me in after a losing season and pronounce me dead."

Another thing that the National Championship-winning coach was known for was never disparaging his opponents. You've got to figure that there were times over his 29 years as head coach that he wanted to say something negative about his opponents, particularly if they ran up the score during one of the few blowout losses he was a part of. An alias would provide the 257-game winner an opportunity to let it fly.

Still, I have a hard time believing that the 85-year-old Hall of Famer is whiling away his retirement on Twitter.

Bronco Mendenhall

Players that have played for Mendenhall have long said that there is another side to the coach that the fans and media don't usually get to see. These former Cougars say the defensive guru has a lighter side and a great sense of humor. He's already on Twitter, but perhaps being Boney Fuller allows an avenue for Mendenhall to unleash this element of his personality.

The surfing-loving coach, like Edwards, has also been known to be tight lipped when it comes to criticisms of opposing coaches and teams. Could the coach be tweeting things he would never say?

Greg Wrubell

Wrubell is known as "the Voice of the Cougars" to BYU fans around the world, and the Canadian-born broadcaster is famous for his incredible amount of preparation that he puts into his job.

Boney Fuller, meanwhile, has been known to scout and research the Cougars' opponents in depth as well. How else could he come up with such informative tweets like the following?

Wrubell, as a broadcast journalist, has to be objective when talking about BYU opponents. But with an alter-ego, he could use all of that research of Cougar foes to hilarious use.

Robert Anae

Now that would be a big stretch.

Compared to Anae, Mendenhall is Jerry Seinfeld when he talks to the media. Anae is strictly business in his post-game interviews and doesn't mince words often. Of all of the candidates, so far, Anae seems the most unlikely.

But, on the other hand, that could be the perfect cover. Maybe he wants you to believe that he is a stoic man that wouldn't be capable of crafting such perfectly hilarious tweets?

Kyle Gunther

If Anae is highly unlikely, then the Salt Lake City-based radio host is inconceivable.

The former University of Utah offensive lineman has been called a Ute homer by Cougar fans for years. Gunther has been known to be critical of Mendenhall and the team on his radio show. It's possible that Gunther secretly has a deep admiration for the Y that would seriously harm his relationship with Ute fans and those associated with the program. Letting his love out for the blue and white through an anonymous twitter handle could be the perfect way to not hinder his career.
