SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's own Dustin Christensen wowed the judges on "The Voice" during his audition on the popular reality TV show that aired Monday.

His road to the show and music was unconventional, to say the least. Not a lot of finance majors and MBA graduates end up in music. And yet, during his rendition of "Downtown Train," Christensen got all four judges to turn their chairs and vie to be his coach.

"It was amazing," Christensen said of the experience. "Obviously it turned out better than I could have ever expected."

Going into the audition process was not without trepidation, Christensen said.

"Your worst fear is that you don't even get to audition, or that nobody turns. And then you have to think to yourself, well, even if nobody turns, as long as I feel like I gave a good performance," he said. "And I was like, if I get one chair, that will be amazing."

Christensen impressed enough that he got all four judges to turn around. Coach Pharrell Williams even called Christensen "a natural."

"To hear compliments from someone like that, everything he touches turns to gold," Christensen said.

Christensen, who graduated from Orem High School, went on to get his MBA and prepared to pursue a career in business.

"It was finally a point where I was just like, I've got to give (singing) a few years just to see if it will pan out, because I'll regret it the rest of my life," Christensen said. "I'm such a nerd with music that … a hobby for me is music, even though it's a job. So it's great for me to have a job that doesn't feel like a job."

Christensen said he went through the process with an open mind, having no expectations.

"I just kept moving forward," he said. "The further I got, the more I realized, this is a really great show and a really great experience."

Christensen will face off against a contestant who has become his best friend on the show next week. He said no matter what happens, he's better off for the experience. He's currently working on an album that he anticipates will come out at the beginning of 2016.
