SALT LAKE CITY — Utahns love fry sauce, and it's becoming a problem. So many fry-fans out there think they know what goes into making the best fry sauce. These differing opinions create some controversy in the fry-sauce world and begs the question: Where can I go to get the absolute best, most amazing, mind-blowing fry sauce (or at least a killer version of it)?

The basic recipe for fry sauce is a combination of mayonnaise and ketchup, though the actual execution and ratio is what makes up the biggest difference in taste. Do you use equal parts of mayo and ketchup? Do you put more of one in than the other? Or do you skip the ketchup all together and substitute barbecue sauce? And, to complicate the matter, some restaurants even add their own spices to create a unique flavor. So, what's best? Which one do Utahns prefer? These are the questions that keep us up at night and it's time we get to the bottom of them.

We asked 100 random people in downtown Salt Lake City the following question: When eating out, where do you go to get the best fry sauce?

Interestingly, answers included a whopping 37 different restaurants. Many gave answers stating that the restaurant they chose had the most delicious fry sauce they had ever tasted, and yet many of the answers were never duplicated. Meaning that overall their tastes are as varied as their options.

After compiling the answers, the following list was created and it's finally official, people. Here are the top 5 restaurants with the absolute, very best, most amazing, mind-blowing fry sauce.

4. The Training Table

Ah yes, The good 'ol Training Table, "A Utah Original", had the fourth-highest number of votes. Its dipping sauce is actually a spinoff of the common recipe. According to the online menu's fries and sides page, the "Ultimate Dipping Sauce" is "a special blend of savory hickory sauce and mayonnaise." Apparently, this sauce is especially delicious with their cheese fries. We'll take four orders, please.

2. Arctic Circle

Coming in at number 2 best fry sauce is Artic Circle. They claim they invented the stuff because they advertise it as "America's First Fry Sauce", so it must be true, right? Hmm…

Important side note:

Two ladies who answered our poll said they loved the fry sauce at some restaurant called Don Carlos. They kept going on about how great it was, but we didn't believe them because we hadn't heard of it. However, upon further extensive and exhaustive research, we found out that Artic Circle used to be named Don Carlos Bar-B-Q. So, there ya go.

Of course, these aren't the only places to get fry sauce in Utah, duh. These honorable mentions carry their own interesting, possibly delicious versions of the sauce:

Red Robin: Try Red Robin's fry sauce with fries, or better yet, impress your friends and get the tower of onion rings. It's way yummy and you'll look cool eating it.

JCW's: Can't forget about JCW's, they're a Utah staple. JCW's fry sauce and "ultimate fry sauce" are must-haves. What makes it "ultimate" you ask? Just a little bee-bee-Q added in is all. Simple, yet superb. Choose from the thick cut fries, regular fries, cheese fries, or chili cheese fries. Or don't choose, and just get 'em all.

Taco Amigo: Taco Who? Taco Amigo my friend! Along with Mexican Food, they serve American food, desserts, and….fry sauce. They say it's a little on the lighter side as far as fry sauces go. What that means, we don't know. But they've got a cult following, so it must be worth something.

Apollo Burger: Stop by for a burger off the grill and a side of fries. Or a gyro. They have those there, too. Dare you to cover it with fry sauce.

Leatherby's: An ice cream place? Sure, why not. Ice cream and fry sauce go together like...oil and water? Montagues and Capulets? Utes and Cougars? Just try it already.

Five Guys: Here you can choose "Five Guys Style" or "Cajun Style", (if you're the spicier type). And when you eat 'em, make sure you sing, "I put my hand upon your hip. When I dip, you dip, we dip. " Cuz it's fun.

Some people claim to not like fry sauce. Those people are cray. They just haven't found the right place yet. And that's why we're here, writing this, enlightening them.

Find your favorite fry sauce spot and other awesome things to do at Utah.com, and we wish you the very best in your ultimate fry sauce quest.
